Patterns are embedded in the human experience.

We use awareness, data and information to extract patterns for just about anything:

  • Nature, biology and the physics of our external world.
  • Personal rhythms, dynamics and interpretation of our internal world.
  • Business systems, processes and strategies for growth.

Patterns are useful because they help us make sense of our reality. They can help us understand what, why and how we do things. Then they offer a potential template or predictable lens to further comprehend our reality.

A pattern is merely the recognition of something repeatable. Something non unique.

If something is completely unique, there is no pattern. However, if something is experienced more than once, there is likely a pattern.

Most things in our world offer patterns.
Most things are experienced more than once.
Most things are not completely unique.

And so, we often ask – “What’s the pattern here?”

But that question can only get us so far…

What if the pattern limits our curiosity and growth? What if it yields the same learning and results?

What could we learn if we break the pattern?

When we let go of what we think we know, and recognize that a new way is always possible. When we get curious about the possibility of deeper learning.

For example:

  • What can we learn when we challenge deeply held beliefs?
  • What might we learn if we experimented with our proven systems?
  • How could we grow if we explored the opposite of what we believe to be true?

The question may not always be – “what’s the pattern?” but perhaps – “what can we learn from breaking the pattern?”
