The end of year holidays tend to introduce mass human chaos. It’s inevitable if you stay connected to mainstream media, commerce and modernized life.

The end of year typically represents more activity for most of us.

We prefer more action over stillness. We prefer more commitments over freedom. We prefer more excitement over boredom. We prefer more doing over being.

The end of year simply amplifies our desire for more things.

That’s all fine if you want to hold onto the same patterns, challenges and stress. It’s fine if you’re seeking no meaningful change or awareness in your life. It’s totally fine to just keep going.

The world will keep you busy all the way through the holidays. And then you’ll be one of those people who says, “Boy, that year just flew by!”

I am not one of those people.

In contrast, 2023 was a long and epic year for me. It was filled with intentional design, experiences and experiments. I learned a lot about myself, my world and my energy. I lived with more purpose and integrity.

I use the end of the year to do the opposite of most people.

I use this time to rest and reflect.

I will shut down next week and step away from major projects and work.

I will commit to nothing outside of time with family and friends.

I will reflect on the last 12 months and inquire about things and questions like…

What gave me energy vs took my energy? What major lessons and failures did I learn from? What people and relationships am I grateful for? What experiences helped me feel more alive and fulfilled?

Then, after the rest and reflection is honored, I will make a plan for the next 12 months. Only then can I have the clear mind and heart to design my future with intention.

Here’s to creating space for rest and reflection.
