Let’s face it, America is a fat country. We have some of the largest people in the world. Most of this, whether you believe it or not, has to do with our eating habits.

There’s two things that affect the size of most humans – diet and exercise. This has been clinically proven and it makes total sense. The other factor, also proven, is that we consume way too much sugar. If you don’t believe that, watch the documentary Fed Up. It will change the way you look at sugar.

Bottom line – we eat too much shit. Here’s a few tips to help you stop eating shit.

1) Look for REAL food

There’s a good saying – “If you can’t grow it, kill it, or pick it, don’t eat it.” That means we should only consume things that come from this Earth – plants and animals. It’s a really good saying. It’s also pretty easy to abide by. Think of all the awesome things you can eat from that… meats, vegetables, fruits, potatoes, milk, cheese, butter… the list goes on!

So next time you’re grocery shopping and you grab a package of thing-its, take a look at the ingredients before you throw it in your cart. If it’s packed with chemicals you can’t pronounce it’s probably not food. Put that shit back!

2) Quit Snacking

Most people love to snack. You know, how you walk by the fridge 10 times a day and open it to see what’s inside, as if you didn’t just look 5 minutes ago. Yeah, we’ve all been there. Snacking is an unhealthy habit. You’re not always hungry, unless you’re a teenage boy that plays 3 sports, who needs to eat to refuel. Most of the time we’re just de-hydrated when we look for snacks. So try keeping a water bottle with you to get rid of those “snack” urges that force un-needed eating.

If you are going to snack, eat something light and healthy. Some good snacks include nuts, fruits, and vegetables. For example, dip a few carrots in some hummus. Or, smash an apple real quick. DO NOT grab a bag of honey roasted peanuts and lick your fingers when you’re done.

3) Stop pouring white sauces all over your food

I used to be a “white-sauce abuser.” White-sauce abusers are people who love adding creamy, white things to their food. Some of the popular white sauces are:

  • Ranch
  • Sour Cream
  • Mayonaise
  • Cream Cheese

Don’t get me wrong, these white sauces are absolutely delicious. But… they’re also EXTREMELY BAD FOR YOU. Stop using them, today. They are making you fat every time you use them. If you don’t see the affect on the outside I guarantee they’re making you fat on the inside. They’re packed with nothing but fat and sugar.

I’m a recovering white-sauce abuser. Years ago I gave up the white sauces… and now I use yogurt instead. I honestly can’t even tell the difference. Fat free [plain] yogurt is a much better alternative with some added health benefits. Give it a try. If you’re not a super picky eater I bet you’ll find that it tastes just as good.

4) Say Good-bye to Fast Food

You’ve heard it a million times… fast food will kill you. It’s true. There’s a reason it’s fast. It’s not real food. Take a few minutes to make some eggs, or grill some chicken. Not only will it taste better, it’ll be cheaper and you’ll live longer. Those are two pretty compelling reasons to give up McDonald’s and Taco Bell.

5) Watch out for Sugar

As I mentioned earlier, sugar is the main bad guy. There’s sugar in almost everything, so you have to be mindful of how much you intake. Sugar is also more addicting than cocaine. Ever wonder why there’s candy in almost every store you go into? Gas stations, FedEx, Kohls, etc. You can find candy anywhere because it’s addicting and it’s easy to sell.

One of the biggest sugar boosters is soda. One soda typically contains about twice the daily value of sugar. That’s A LOT of sugar in one little can. If you don’t believe me watch your 5 year-old cousin next time they drink a soda. They’ll bounce off the walls like a crack addict, and then crash when the sugar wears off. It’s bad stuff. And diet soda isn’t any better… it makes up for its lack of sugar by jamming in harmful chemicals like aspartame. Just get rid of soda all together. I did 8 years ago and I don’t miss it at all.

What are you waiting for???

There’s plenty of other tricks to help you live a healthier lifestyle, but these few tips can make a real difference if you abide by them. It’s not easy, but once you get in the habit you’ll never look back. You’ll feel better, you’ll look better, and you’ll be better. The time is NOW.

  1. I came to your website to read your Responsive Image Grids Using CSS tutorial. What I found was a technical expert who also cares about people and health and truth who isn’t afraid to voice it. Some folks needs websites and tech help. Everyone needs to rise above this SHIT you’ve described.

Excellent article. Thanks for what you do.
